In person and via zoom.

Chaired by Julia Macfarlane, Scottish/Indonesian journalist and AIS council member,
with Fiona McKay Scottish/Indonesian fashion curator and Fatma Ayu, Indonesian journalist

They will talk about their connection with Raden Adjeng Kartini, an intellectual who elevated the status of Indonesian women, and their identity, how they live in two cultures and how they embrace Indonesian culture in their chosen fields.

The discussion will be followed by refreshments. 

Speaker profiles 

Julia MacFarlane
Journalist

Julia was born in Jakarta to an Indonesian mother and Scottish father and grew up in both Indonesia and Singapore before moving to Scotland in the late 1990s. After school, Julia studied English at university before working at the BBC World Service. After stints in the Middle East and working in different departments in news, Julia moved to Disney’s ABC News to work as a foreign correspondent during the Trump and Biden presidencies and the global pandemic. Julia now is a freelance journalist working on independent projects and part time at the BBC in Scotland.

Fiona McKay
Fashion Curator

Fiona is a fashion curator with a background in art history and architecture. Born in Singapore, she grew up in both Indonesia and Scotland. Graduating with an MA in Fashion Curation in 2013, she co-founded an independent curatorial studio, White Line Projects, which specialises in fashion exhibitions before she joined the Centre for Sustainable Fashion in 2019. In 2022, Fiona joined the Design Museum as Assistant Curator working on their fashion-related exhibitions. She lives in north-east London with her husband and three-year-old daughter.

Fatma Ayu
Journalist

Fatma is a Metro TV journalist in Indonesia with a law background. She was born and grew up in Indonesia and graduated with a law degree from the University of Airlangga in Jakarta. She won a Chevening scholarship 2023/2024 from the UK government and is currently taking a postgraduate law degree at Queen Mary University, London. Fatma Ayu also gained a podium position in the Miss Indonesia competition in 2017.
