We had an Indonesian author in town, who was doing some events in Norwich courtesy of The British Council and National Writers Centre. Indonesian author Nuril Basri was in conversation with Dr Ben Murtagh of SOAS and talked about his books and the current writing scene in Indonesia.
Nuril Basri was born in a village in West Java, Indonesia, and raised in a staunchly Islamic community. Nuril has worked in a variety of positions over the years: cashier, tutor, account manager, waiter, etc. the combined experience of which has served to enrich his characters and setting.
His writing spans tragicomedy and bildungsroman. With themes around: loneliness, insecurity, friendship, dysfunctional family, LGBT, and the underdogs. His works have been translated into English and Malay. Published works include: Halo, Aku Dalam Novel (2009), My Favorite Goodbye (2015); Not a Virgin (2017), Love, Lies, and Indomee (2019), Rasa (2019) etc.
Nuril was awarded a grant by National Book Committee of Indonesia to complete residency in the UK in 2017. And recently received a grant from Robert Bosch Stiftung & Literarisches Colloquium Berlin ‘Crossing Borders’ to conduct research for his next novel in Germany. He likes funny stuffs and able to ride motorcycle.
