PROGRAMME FOR 2017

Thursday 12 October  Dr John Dransfield, Honorary Research Fellow at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, gave a talk to the Society at St Matthew’s Conference Centre, Westminster on “A Malesian botanist in Madagascar”.

Monday 2 October  The Society organised a private tour for a group of its members to see the Indonesian collection at the V&A Museum Archives at Blythe House.

Wednesday 6 September  The Society held an Autumn Reception for its members at the new Indonesian Embassy (30 Great Peter Street).

Wednesday 3 May  H.E. Dr Rizal Sukma, Indonesian Ambassador, gave a talk to the Society at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on “Indonesian Foreign policy”.

Tuesday 25 April   Thomas Siregar, Minister-Counsellor at the Indonesian Embassy, gave a talk at Goldsmiths, University of London on “The legacy of the 1955 Asian African Conference in Bandung”.

Sunday 2 April   The Society organised a private visit for Geoffrey Saba’s collection of Central Javanese batik textiles at his house in Peckham

Wednesday 22 March  The Society’s scheduled lecture at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was cancelled because of a terrorist incident in Westminster.

Monday 13 February    The Society showed the documentary film “Searching for Ali Wallace”, directed by Jamie Curtis Hayward, at the Natural History Museum. The film was introduced by Lord Cranbrook.

Wednesday 18 January   Geoffrey Roberts, linguist, gave a talk at St Matthew’s Conference Centre, Westminster on “The fun, the challenge and the frustration of Indonesian: A linguist’s view of this rapidly evolving and much misunderstood language”

Monday 14 November   The Society held its Annual General Meeting at the Indonesian Embassy, after which Prof. T A Fauzi Soelaiman, Indonesian Ambassador to UNESCO, gave a talk on “Indonesia in UNESCO”

Thursday 20 October  Mike Tonkin, architect, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Hot and Wet, the tropical architecture of Indonesia.”

Monday 17 October   The Society co-hosted a Careers evening for Indonesian students at the Indonesian Embassy in conjunction with the Young Indonesian Professionals Association.

Tuesday 11 October  The Society organised a private tour for a group of its members to see the Indonesian collection at the British Library

Tuesday 27 September   H.E. Moazzam Malik, British Ambassador to Indonesia, spoke at the Indonesian Embassy on “UK-Indonesian relations”.

Saturday 17 September  The Society organised a private tour for a group of its members to see the Indonesian collections at the Pitt Rivers and Ashmolean museums in Oxford

Saturday 4 June   The Society hosted the Anglo-Indonesian Society’s 60th Anniversary Picnic at lunchtime at Wisma Nusantara for Members of the Society and their families and friends in celebration of the the Society’s 60th anniversary year.

Tuesday 17 May 2016   Dr Carool Kersten, Senior Lecturer at King’s College London, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “An Indonesian Islam”.

Monday 25 April   The Society held a panel discussion at the Indonesian Embassy on “Modern Women’s Issues in Indonesia”. The panel was chaired by Dr Mari Mulyani, lecturer at the University of Indonesia and Oxford University, and included Hana Satriyo, former Director for Gender and Women’s Participation at the Asia Foundation in Jakarta and Dorothy Ferary, former President of PPI London.

Tuesday 12 April 2016   Goenawan Mohamad, author, commentator and co-founder of Tempo magazine, spoke at the Indonesian Embassy on “Islam and Literature”.

Tuesday 22 March 2016   The Society held a welcome reception for the new Indonesian Ambassador, H.E. Rizal Sukma, and his wife at the Indonesian Embassy.

Wednesday 9 March 2016   Dr Roger Montgomery, former Fellow at the Asia Research Centre of the London School of Economics, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Will no-one plant a tree in Indonesia”.

Wednesday 10 February 2016   Tim Hannigan, author and journalist, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Raffles and the British invasion of Java”.

Tuesday 12 January 2016   Paul Sochaczewski, author and conservationist, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Hantus in the House: Indonesian tales of ghosts, spirits, goblins and things that go bump in the night”.

PROGRAMME FOR 2015

Thursday 3 December 2015   The Society, in conjunction with the Young Indonesian Professionals Association,  hosted a Winter Reception at the Indonesian Embassy for Indonesian students and young professionals in the UK. This included a panel session on ‘Breaking into the Big Four audit firms in the UK’.

Wednesday 25 November 2015   The Society held its Annual General Meeting at the Indonesian Embassy, after which William Ingram, Indonesian textile expert, gave a talk on “Threads of Life” about the promotion of traditional textile weaving in eastern Indonesia.

Thursday 29 October 2015    Professor Bill McGuire, Professor Emeritus of Geophysical and Climate Hazards at University College London, and Professor Michael Hitchcock, Goldsmiths, University of London gave a joint talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Tambora – the volcano that shook the world”.

Saturday 26 September 2015    The Society organised a private tour for a group of its members to see the Indonesian textiles at Brighton Museum followed by dinner at the Warung Tujuh restaurant in Brighton.

Thursday 17 September 2015   Professor Matthew Cohen, Royal Holloway, University of London, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Wayang in Modernity”

Saturday 13 June 2015   The Society hosted its second annual lunchtime Summer Picnic at Wisma Nusantara for Members of the Society and their families.

Thursday 11 June 2015   The Society organised a private tour for a group of its Members to see the Raffles collection of Indonesian objects at the British Museum.

Tuesday 9 June 2015   The Society organised a second private tour for a group of its Members to see a selection of the Indonesian objects in the Horniman Museum’s Study Collection Centre.

Tuesday 19 May 2015   The Society organised a private tour for a group of its Members to see specimens from the Indonesian collection at the Natural History Museum.

Tuesday 12 May 2015, Elizabeth Pisani, author and journalist, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “The Centre cannot Hold: Decentralisation in the Jokowi era”.

Tuesday 28 April 2015    Dr Lydia Kieven, University of Frankfurt, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Panji ‘cap-figure’ culture in East Java”.

Thursday 16 April 2015   The Society held a Spring Reception at the Indonesian Embassy for Indonesian students and young professionals. This included a panel session on ‘Working in the City’ for those interested in pursuing a business career.

Monday 9 March 2015    Professor Michael Hitchcock, Goldsmiths, University of London,, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Macau and the Malay World”.

Thursday 5 February 2015    Harry Marshall, Creative Director of Icon Films, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Homo Floresiensis: The Hobbit of Flores and other past hominids”.

Tuesday 13 January 2015      Lord Cranbrook, Member of Council, and Dr Andrew Polaszek, former Keeper of Entomology at the Natural History Museum, gave a joint talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Insect diversity and conservation in Borneo and the importance of protected reserves in oil palm plantations”.

Thursday 6 November 2014     The Society held its Annual General Meeting at the Indonesian Embassy, after which Barbara Bisco, author and anthropologist, gave a talk on “A Novelist’s Choices” about her novels set in Indonesia.

Tuesday 28 October 2014       The Society organised a private tour for a group of its Members to see a selection of the Indonesian objects in the Horniman Museum’s Study Collection Centre.

Saturday 18 October 2014      The Society organised two lectures at the Indonesia Kontemporer festival 2014 at SOAS.. They were convened and moderated by Lesley Pullen, Member of Council.  Dr Alessandra Bruni Lopez y Royo of SOAS spoke on “Wayang in the Visual culture of Java” and Professor Matthew Cohen of Royal Holloway spoke on “Wayang in Colonial Indonesia: Tradition in Modernity”.

Monday 6 October 2014         Mark Canning CMG, former British Ambassador to Indonesia, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Impressions of Indonesia”.

Thursday 18 September 2014       Dr Tim Stowe, Member of the Management Board of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Hutan Harapan: a forest with hope”.

Saturday 21 June 2014           The Society hosted a lunchtime Summer Picnic at Wisma Nusantara for Members of the Society and their families.

Thursday 19 June 2014           Judith Heimann, Writer, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on  “The Airmen and the Headhunters: A true story of lost soldiers, heroic tribesmen and the unlikeliest rescue of World War II”.

Monday 12 May 2014              Dr Tim Coles OBE, Founder and CEO of Operation Wallacea,  gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Operation Wallacea: The biodiversity of Sulawesi-endemic rich forests and biodiverse reefs”.

Monday 28 April 2014             The Society hosted its second annual party at the Indonesian Embassy for Indonesian students in London to meet young Londoners.

Tuesday 22 April 2014             Laura Michie, Ph.D student at Portsmouth University, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on ” “Can’t we all just get along? Understanding coexistence in Fiddler Crabs”.

Wednesday 26 March 2014          Dr Peter Carey MBE, Adjunct Professor at Universitas Indonesia, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Indonesia’s Elections 2014: A Major Turning Point?”.

Tuesday 25 February 2014           Ashley Leiman OBE, Director and Trustee of the Orangutan Foundation, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “The Orangutan Foundation: Past Achievements and Future Challenges: Saving the Orangutan”. She also displayed a number of woodcarvings from her collection of Indonesian and Malaysian art, including a rare set of tun tun sticks from Sarawak.          

Tuesday 21 January 2014              Hon. Michael Tollemache, London art expert and dealer, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Raden Saleh: 19th Century Javanese artist in Europe, Father of Modern Painting in Java”.

Wednesday, 4 September 2013     Professor Sir Ghillean Prance, former Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “The Importance of Tropical Rainforests”.

Wednesday, 26 June 2013              Dr Jonathan Agranoff, Member of Council, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy about tempe in Indonesia for a ‘Taste of Tempe” evening hosted by the Society.

Thursday, 30 May 2013                  Mari Mulyani, DPhil student at Oxford University, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Climate change policy for Indonesian rain forests”.

Saturday, 18 May 2013                  John and Farida Read, Members of the Society, hosted a Society lunch for Indonesian students in Cambridge at their home in Saffron Walden.

Thursday, 25 April 2013              The Society hosted a party at the Indonesian Embassy for Indonesian students in London to meet young Londoners.

Thursday, 11 April 2013              The architect Berry Natalegawa, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Indonesian Architecture: Challenges and Opportunities”.

Monday, 25 March 2013             The Society, together with Nottingham University, jointly hosted a one-day business seminar at Nottingham University for Indonesian university students in the UK.

Thursday, 7 March 2013            Victoria Glendinning, author, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on her new book “Raffles and the Golden Opportunity”.

Tuesday, 8 January 2013           The lawyer David Hallmark and the author Paul Sochaczewski gave a joint talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “Alfred Russel Wallace and his 100-year legacy”.

Tuesday. 9 October 2012                          Dr Anna Nekaris, Reader in Biological Anthropology and Primate Conservation at Oxford Brookes University, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on the slow loris.

Thursday, 27 September 2012               The Society held a social evening for its members at the Indonesian Embassy.

Thursday, 12 July 2012                            Charles Humfrey, Chairman of the Society, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on “By Boat to the Southern Maluku and Papuan Coasts”

Wednesday, 6 April 2011                Nigel Barley, anthropologist and author, gave a talk at the Indonesian Embassy on Sir Stamford Raffles, Statesman and Scholar, to mark the 200th anniversary year of Raffles becoming Lieutenant Governor of Java.
